Scarification

Please note, scarifying is not part of our garden maintenance, it is priced in a different way.

What is lawn scarification?

Scarification is carried out to remove organic matter from around the base of the grass plants and tidy up any straggly lateral growth. In a nutshell, scarification removes material, probably in the form of thatch or moss that will otherwise prevent good dense grass growth. If you do not scarify, debris will build up and lead to other problems. Thatchy and mossy lawns will not be very wear or drought tolerant. Once the space has been created around the base of the grass plants, the trick is to encourage the grass to fill the space.

What is thatch?

thatch okThatch is a natural part of the living turf and generally desirable. Thatch is a layer of dead turf material.  An excessive thatch layer (typically more than 12 - 20mm,) can restrict the movement of air, water, fertiliser and other materials to the roots of the grass, all of which are necessary for healthy turf growth. Contrary to popular belief, it is not formed from the grass leaves that fall into the turf after mowing. Thatch forms for several reasons, but the most important is improper fertilisation. When grass is growing properly, it forms new roots, stems and leaves as the old ones die. As long as new grass is formed at about the same rate as the old dies, there will be no thatch accumulation, but when the grass grows faster than the old material can be destroyed, thatch accumulates.Without excessive thatch, moss has nowhere to root into and therefore this process is by far, the most effective procedure available for moss removal today.

What you will get

This lawn care service can be booked as ad hoc, but it is part of our regular garden maintenance programme, as well. One of our colleague will come on a pre-arranged date to carry out it. The duration of this service depends on many factors e.g. the size of the area to be done, the condition of the lawn, and the amount of the green waste. Scarification makes a huge amount of green waste, but do not be frightened, all will be removed by us, and your lawn left clear and tidy.

What type of scarifying machines does Sandor's Gardening use?

scarifierThe latest scarifier machine (EINHELL GC-SC 2240 P) used by Sandor's Gardening has blade roller, with ball bearings and 18 high-grade steel blades, tackles weeds, moss and their roots in highly effective manner. The working depth can be adjusted centrally over eight different levels, enabling you to effortlessly and precisely adapt the scarifier to the requirements of the particular soil and vegetation. Our scarifer and process should not be confused with the typical machine available on the domestic market, which is more of a lawn rake. You will get a much more effective treatment with our intensive machine than you would using a DIY machine. Our petrol scarifier is recommended for lawns of up to approximately 1200 m².

In spring (and autumn for that matter) scarification is best combined with other operations, like top dressing, overseeding and applying fertiliser.

Will Scarification be expensive?

Scarification is typically priced at 3x your garden maintenance price. I.e. if your maintenance is usually £60 your scarification price will be £60 x 3 = £180.
